The Workout You Didn't Know You Needed
A warm welcome to Bluecoats Sports members
You already know movement is good for you, but so is singing!
Here at Christ’s Hospital Choral Society we’re always happy to have new members sing with us, and who better than people who know the benefit of exercise, and do that just a few yards from where we rehearse?
Here's why singing is so good for you :
Body
Singing is a genuine physical workout for your lungs. It uses your full lung capacity — something most of us rarely do in everyday life — building breath control and capacity over time. Think Pilates!
Choir singing is linked to improved cardiovascular fitness, better mobility and stronger posture.
Mind
Through the release of endorphins, singing has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, and gives a sense of well-being.
Nearly three-quarters of choir singers say it boosts their optimism.
Community
Choir singers enjoy a feeling of belonging, and find the harmonious music they make a hugely pleasureable bonding activity.
If you ever sang in a school or church choir, or anywhere else, you already have more of a head start than you might think. It all comes back faster than you'd expect. And if you've never sung a note or can't read music but would like to give it a go, that's absolutely fine too. Plenty of our members started exactly there and, if you’d like to try, come along to four rehearsals for free. If you then want to become a member we would offer a reduced subscription. Our current full annual subscription is only £110, but this would be reduced to £90 in the first year for you as a Bluecoats member.
We will be putting on two concerts in the remaining months of 2026 that you could be part of. The first is Mozart's fabulous 'Mass in C Minor', a wonderful musical work and a joy to sing. The date for that concert is Saturday November 14th, and we'll be singing in the glorious Christ's Hospital Chapel. Just being able to sing there is a huge privilege in itself, but we have a second chance on Saturday December 19th when we hold our ever-popular annual Christmas concert, regularly with an audience of 400 people or more, a hugely enjoyable evening for singers and audience alike.
Our first rehearsal of our new term will be on Tuesday 8th September at 7.30 p.m. in the Hertford Centre, Christ's Hospital. Car parking is in the main carpark rather than the Bluecoats carpark. We start the first rehearsal of each new singing year with a short social and a glass of wine. You could simply turn up if you are interested, but it would be helpful to know if you do plan on coming by completing and sending the form below. If you would like to know more about visit this page >>, or complete the form below.
