Summer in France

Our 2024 Summer concert
features music by French composers, including Maurice Duruflé's Requiem and Gabriel Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine.
Maurice Duruflé (1902 – 1986) was a French composer and organist. He was not a prolific composer and his Requiem is without doubt his most well known of his few choral works. His other three include Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens of which Ubi Caritas et amor is the first part and will be sung in this concert.
Gabriel Fauré's (1845 – 1924) own Requiem is perhaps even better known than Duruflé's, but his Cantique de Jean Racine, written when he was only 19 years old, can be seen as a prelude to that later work; a much loved piece and a must-have for any programme of French music.
Fauré also wrote two of the other pieces in our concert - Ave Verum Corpus and Tantum Ergo, motets written for ladies voices only.
Hymne à la Vierge, is by Pierre Villette (1926 – 1998) who studied music under Duruflé at the Paris Conservatoire.
The choir will be conducted by our Director of Music, Verity Bramson, who is Head of Singing in the Music Department at Christ's Hospital school.
Jonathan Lee, Organist at Christ's Hospital school, will accompany us on the splendid and recently restored Chapel organ.
